Did you know you can estimate how many sales any eBook or print book on Amazon is currently selling just by looking at its listing on Amazon? Even better, you can see how many books you have to sell in order to reach a specific rank.
All you have to do is find the Amazon Sales Rank for any eBook or print book on Amazon and type that number into the simple Amazon Book Sales Calculator developed by Skye Chilton.
You can use this handy tool to give you an accurate estimation of how many copies are being sold on Amazon for any eBook or print book, but also to find out how many sales you need in one day or one month to hit a certain bestseller ranking.
If you’re planning a book launch or promotion, this data can help you predict how high your book will rank on Amazon and if you can hit #1 in your bestseller categories on Amazon.
You can also use this data for market research, to get a good idea how big a niche or market is before you invest the time writing, publishing and marketing a book in that market. For example, if you notice all your competitors in a market aren’t selling more than 100 eBook copies per month on Amazon Kindle, you can be pretty sure your book won’t be selling more than 100 eBook copies per month on Kindle unless your book is a lot better than the competition, is more appealing to the market, and you have a better marketing strategy than the competition.
You can find out more on the Amazon Book Sales Calculator on TCK Publishing.

Nicholas, is this gadget something you can download, or do you use it from the website? And if the latter, do you need to sign up as a “member?” Thanks for sharing, but I just need a bit more info. 🙂

You use it straight from the website. As far as I can tell, you don’t need to sign up or anything 🙂

Thanks for the answer. Tried that. Sadly, it just takes me to a blank page, with only a TCK header at the top. Maybe it’s “busy?” 🙂 I’ll keep trying. I like the idea, but would like to see it in action for myself. Will share it on The Write Stuff as soon as I can figure it out. Thanks for sharing!

Marcia, I just tried it and it works directly on the site. Nothing to download or sign up for. Note that currently, it’s only for books sold on Amazon.com. The calculator doesn’t work for sales on Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, etc.

Thanks, Connie. My books are on Amazon.com, but I just can’t get this to work. I fill in the number, click the button, and it takes me to another page, but the page is blank except for the header at the top. 😦 I’ll keep trying. I’d love to use this, but perhaps it has something to do with my settings or some such. I have no clue.

The number you need to enter is either the current rank of your book on Amazon.com to calculate your sales, or the rank you’d like to reach to find out how many books you need to sell to reach it. I hope you can get it working.

Nope, still not working. I get to the next page, and now, in addition to the TCK banner at the top, it mentions the calculator, and then it’s blank from there on down, no matter how long I wait. I’m thinking it’s not registering the numbers I type in, or some thing. *sigh* I’ll keep trying to figure it out.

You may want to try restarting your browser or computer. If it still doesn’t work, perhaps your firewall or browser settings are blocking it.

Yeah, I’m leaving the correct number (double-checked the illustration). I’m pretty sure it’s on my end, as you say, firewall or the like. I AM going to reboot, just to be sure, as soon as I finish what I’m working on. That often fixes a LOT of problems. Thanks for trying to help me. I appreciate it very much. 🙂

Woohoo! Success! It works fine from my iPhone, so definitely a browser or firewall problem on my PC. And it’s pretty darn cool, too. Thanks for sharing, Nicholas. I’m passing it along.

No misguiding at all, Nicholas. Though it might be worth mentioning that if others have problems, it could be their browser settings or a firewall, and that if they don’t want to mess with those, they should be able to access it from their phones. I discovered it’s a good way to do it, anyway, because you can keep the calculator open on your phone, and check each of your books, one after the other on your computer. It’s faster than having two screens open. 🙂 So, as is often the case, problems often show us better ways to do things. Thanks so much for sharing this, Nicholas. I’m going to reblog this right now, before I forget.

Speaking of sharing, check out what Nicholas Rossis shared yesterday. This is VERY cool, and can help you plan your marketing strategies. I had trouble at first (a firewall on my PC was blocking me), but it works perfectly on my iPhone. Head on over and give it a whirl.
