Readers of my blog may remember my obituary for Meli, our dog and faithful companion of 14 years.
After over a year, we now have a new dog to introduce. To be honest, I still find it hard to move on, but the missus was sorely missing one, and I want to make her happy, so… I’m officially introducing Izzy.
Izzy is just over a year old and I was hoping the story I’d share with you today is how she was found stranded on a mountain. She had just given birth to two puppies, only one of whom survived the mountain foxes. When she was found, she was a mess, and the lovely woman who rescued her and her puppy had to trim all her hair and treat various minor ailments. She posted Izzy’s story on Facebook and reached out to us. After meeting them, we decided to take her.
A couple of months later, Izzy’s puppy was ready to move to his new home, and we took Izzy to ours.
A Misnomer if I ever saw one
As for Izzy’s name, it was given to her because of her easy-going nature.
However, it’s starting to sound like a bit of a misnomer given her puppy-like traits, which include stealing, begging, and chewing on anything that moves (like the two increasingly freaked out cats) or doesn’t (like my Kindle). So, instead of the inspirational story of how Izzy became a member of our household, I find myself having to share the story of how she chewed up my trusted Kindle Paperwhite:
Of course, Izzy is blaming Perro the cat: he was the one who jumped on my desk (in a desperate attempt to save himself from her butt-sniffing affections) and accidentally kicked my Kindle onto the floor.
But I’ll let you be the judge of who’s to blame…

Ahhh. She is an adorable pup. Hopefully Izzy will grow out of the bad habits. One is still pretty young. When one of our dogs was a pup, he chewed thorough the spine of my huge and expensive dictionary. Lee made a book cover for it and I may still have it around here somewhere.

Aww, she looks way too cute for mischief, lol! 😂 Perhaps Chewbacca (chewy) for short, instead of Izzy?! Sorry about your Kindle.

Oh my I know she only did this because she is a pup but it’s no less heart breaking. However she will pay you back in joy and love so it works out just fine. 😊

What a gorgeous girl! Puppy traits are endearing, but they can be exasperating too. Some dogs seem to have a thing for tech – maybe they’re wondering what all the fuss is about.

Very cute and mischievous. Hope she mellows just enough to put the cats and Kindle at ease.

Oh, don’t worry about the cats too much. They’re the ones winding her up half the time, so it’s part their fault.

Dogs always blame the cats, but it is suspect the Kindle was never chewed on before. 🙂 She’s adorable. Hopefully will grow out of her puppy habits.

Poor Izzy. What a sad start she’s had in life. But she was obviously determined to survive. Now, she’s found a loving home, and with your guidance, she’ll turn into a wonderful and beloved member of your family. Assuming you can keep your Kindles and other valuables where she can’t reach them until she outgrows the chewing thing, that is. We had to learn pretty quickly that one of our dachshunds, Dancing With Wieners Star, Maksim Hotdogski–A/K/A Maks–was never going to outgrow the need to chew everything he could get his teeth into. Especially his fleece blankets and doggie beds. So, here we are more than 12 years later, still being ever vigilant in that regard. But he’s been worth it.
I hope you’ll have an easier time ahead with Izzy, because frankly, that picture is adorable! Just remember, she’s not a replacement for your precious Meli. Just an equally lovable “sibling.” Good luck! I suspect she’s worth the effort. 🙂

Wise words, Marcia–and a terrifying prospect of spending the next 12 years placing gadgets out of her reach 😀

It becomes second nature after a while. And to be fair, many dogs outgrow it, so don’t worry too much. 😀 (DO hide the Kindle, though. If I had to spend ONE day without mine, I’d be completely distraught. 😯 )

I’m trying not to laugh, but I had to train a cell phone eating dog, so I feel your pain. Izzy is adorable and I’m sure she’ll get the hang of life in the Rossis household very soon.

OH, dear! A cell phone sounds pretty grim. My first dachsie ate a computer mouse. Not quite as bad, but the x-ray was shocking. All these little wires snarled up in his tummy. 😦 Happily, no surgery required, but it scared me, for sure.

Izzy is a beautiful dog. They sure do keep you entertained and yes, they love to chew on various things. I had a Jack Russell that made it clear I was her human and she was in charge. I lost her a few years ago and I’ve missed her; you do miss your pets after they’re gone. Have fun with Izzy.

We recently rescued a terrier mix who looks a lot like Izzy. We have had Rottweilers and pitty mixes–all “easier” dogs than this little girl who came from street dog stock and was terrified of everything. No exaggeration. It’s been a year now and she finds the world a better place, but will never be “solid.” However, she made me laugh when my heart was broken from losing an exceptional spirit in dog form, and wants so much to be good We are happy she came to us with all her issues. We have helped each other heal. You and Izzy are lucky to have found each other and I wish you a long and joyful life together.

She’s lovely, and I’m sure she’ll quickly become an inseparable part of the family. How long before (if?) she grows out of the chewing phase? Hmm. Not so easy to predict. We rehomed a Spanish Podenco (actually 3 of them, but I’m thinking of the most recent addition) at 4 months old. I can’t even remember the name he arrived with, but he quickly became known as ‘Dyson’ because he will hoover up anything left within his reach, edible or not. He’s now 18 months and improving. A little. A very little.
We keep saying glibly, “He’ll grow out of it.” Maybe.
