When I first started working on the Internet, back in the mid-90s, we had to code everything by hand. And I mean, everything. You couldn’t even write a simple “Hello World” without a dozen lines of code.
Fast-forward to today’s WordPress-powered blogs and websites and the difference couldn’t be starker. Even though my coding experience has proven invaluable time and again, it’s now possible to develop in a single day a website that would have taken me at least a week back then. Months, if I wanted to use some of the fancier elements that are now available at the click of a button!
And it still amazes me that it’s all free! So, this is my way of saying “thank-you” to Automattic and the WordPress team for making my life so much easier–and productive. Many thanks to Hosting Tribunal for the excellent infographic!
And if you like my site and are wondering how you could design something similar, the answer is simple: Elegant Theme’s Divi Theme is, by far, the greatest WordPress theme I have seen todate and the one I always use. You can find out more here (disclaimer: I am an Elegant Theme affiliate. The non-affiliate link is here.)

My first website was coded from scratch, too. It wasn’t very fancy and took me a few weeks. I, too, am beyond grateful that it’s a much easier process now.

Impressive reach, and just when I’d long quit asking myself if blogging was dead 🙂 Maybe it just went to sleep awhile, esp on my site, lol 🙂 Am enjoying using it again & having a better sense of it’s reach into & with Twitter esp (for me) & other mediums.

Thank you, Michael! I agree. In fact, my company has developed its own CMS but we’re now using WP for most of our clients.

Oh gosh, yes, that lovely black screen with the c:> sitting there, with your flashing cursor awaiting an instruction! I was so impressed when I went to a company using the new Windows 3.1. It was definitely a quantum leap!
I was still in that mindset when I discovered WordPress through, of all things, the birdwatching group I joined. Learning to use their WP site set me off on a whole new career!
Thanks for the Infograph, Nicholas… I like that stuff 🙂
