A writer friend contacted me the other day to ask if I had any how-to posts on self-publishing. Specifically, she was asking for detailed information on how to self-publish her book on Amazon.
I didn’t have anything like that, as this blog assumes you will have already published your book and are looking for ways to promote it. But after a quick search, I realized that Amazon has dedicated an entire microsite to just that. They call it KDP Jumpstart and is a mini-course that walks you through all steps. So, here it is, for any writers who are still looking to self-publish their first book.

We do make these assumptions, don’t we?
A couple of days ago I went onto a Facebook page I belong to (British and Irish Authors) to query what anyone was doing about Amazon’s impending change to VAT collection (sounds like we are going to end up paying 20% more for our adverts, because none of us earn enough to be VAT registered in the UK), but when Is scrolled down, I came across a post from a lady bemoaning how hard it was to get her self-published paperback into book shops.
Someone asked the question: “Have you thought of doing and eBook version?”
The answer: “What’s an eBook?”
Speechless…

As for VAT, I chose to ignore the prompts. What have you found out?

We all came to the same conclusion. As far as any of us can gather, the only real effect is that Amazon ads will now cost us 20% more, which we won’t be able to recoup unless we are VAT registered, which none of us are 😦

Maybe that explains the extra cost of my ads…

Not sure they have implemented this yet, but with Amazon, who knows?

I hope they have! I’ve been noticing a ~20% increase in my advertising costs for the past couple of months.

Very useful if an author needs his or her hand holding all the way through the publishing process, and doesn’t mind becoming a cog in the giant Amazon behemoth 😉 Cheers, Jon.

I’m glad to know this is out there. KDP is pretty intuitive to me, but I actually get that question a lot. Thanks!
