Have you ever wondered why some parts of letters are called tails and stems, and what are other parts besides them called?
As David Maier explains, a lot of the terminology seems to come from human and animal counterparts with roughly the same shape or position (eye, tail, head, foot, shoulder, arm, beak). Others are more directly descriptive (crossbar, terminal, bowl).

I had never really thought about it. But it makes sense. 🙂

I have done plenty of design work for my clients, and that often includes typography. But I never knew most of these!

There’s a lot of history there. I think serif fonts can look more elegant & stylish, but sans serif fonts are generally better for utilitarian purposes, especially if a compact font is preferred or necessitated; horses for courses, as the saying goes! Cheers, Jon.

Indeed! Also, sans-serif looks more modern. A common combination is sans-serif titles with serif font (for ease of reading).
