As Tracey Hirt of Bored Panda points out, 2020 reads like a kindergartner’s first attempt at fiction:
Um, so first an entire continent was on fire. But then there was this disease, and everyone forgot about that. So then the whole world had to stay home. And school was canceled for the year. And a bunch of people got real mad about stuff. And, um….um…BAM! Murder hornets!
We love to hate 2020. The pandemic, lives lost, things we took for granted disappearing like morning dew from a leaf. All we’re left with, it seems, is divisions, limitations, discomfort. And loss. If we had to sum up 2020 in one word, it would be loss.
And yet, that’s only half the story. Yes, I lost my freedom to eat out but had work, thanks to the wonderful people of InSync Media.
I lost my dad but he went in the best possible way. He was on his feet until the very end, was in no pain, and lived a full life.
I didn’t write any new fiction but my third children’s book, Whatever Lola’s Wants, was published in Greece and I published two new books:
- I ghostwrote Fear Begets Murder with my childhood friend, Sam Diego.
- The second was co-written with Rayne Hall. Yes folks, Copywriting: Get Paid to Write Promotional Texts is now available on Amazon! And yes, I will share more details in a future post.
More importantly, we kept our sense of humor, as the following memes from Bored Panda prove.
So, let’s welcome 2021 with confidence. And if we can’t muster any confidence, let’s just fake it. I mean, how much worse can it get? And no, universe, that’s not a challenge…

I’m not rushing to welcome 2021; not that the change of calendar is very important for me anyway; but I fear that we have some way to go yet before we are ‘out of the wood’, so I suggest we keep our chins up, stiffen our resolve, and keep soldiering on in good humour. There: that was quite a good cliché tally, wasn’t it? 😉 Oh, and happy new year! 😀 Cheers, Jon.

I suspect you’re quite right, Jon! Not quite there yet – but hopefully closer to the end than we were a few months ago. Chins up, then, and cheers!

Like Jon, I have no great hopes that a change in the calendar will make much difference. The virus doesn’t know it’s a new year. It’ll be with us for most of 2021 unless a miracle happens and the idiots change their behaviour.
Sorry to be so pessimistic! I’m not usually.
And there’s still Climate Change and Terrorism, and Wars around the globe, and Slavery, and Loss of Biodiversity and…

Got to say, the asteroid ad UFO is hilarious! Funny, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it came to pass…

There’s still time for aliens or a meteor. I’m still waiting on zombies. Seriously though, I’m thinking at least the first part of 2021 is going to be 2020: The Epilogue. Mostly because you had so many people thinking things were okay and running off to live life like the olden days. January is going to be wild and frightening. Keep in mind that I work in a school in the USA, so I have a high chance of getting rocked right out of the gate. Three cheers for pessimism!

Yes, things may get worse before they get better. But we’ll get there in the end! Keep safe, my friend.
