I recently discovered DIY Book Design (thank you, Krystallia!) and just had to share the news.
DIY Book Design has a number of useful tools and tutorials, all aimed at helping you produce the perfect image for your book. From a number of tutorials helping with the design of your book cover to taking that cover and transforming it into a great-looking 3D mockup, DIY Book Design has got you covered.
It’s this last feature that caught my eye. You get to choose between a Single and Composite look for your books. The Single look lets you display your book as a Kindle/tablet/mobile/paper standalone image:
The Composite view lets you design a combination featuring various formats:
Generating the mockup is as simple as 1-2-3, as the interface guides you through the entire process. You get the option of creating a white or transparent background for your books. The whole process takes, literally, seconds. And the end result is pretty amazing.
For extra oomph, you can add your own background to the image using any photo editing software (I swear by Corel PaintShop Pro), if you have selected the transparent background:
Not bad, considering it was done in under 10 minutes (I did have the background and book cover images ready, though).
And if you think all that is impressive, here’s the best part: using DIY Book Design is completely free! I know I’ll be using it a lot in the coming months, as I’m working on a series of Bookbub Ads (I’ll let you know how these go in the near future). I hope you find it as useful as I plan to!

I’ve been getting my 3D mockups by running scripts in Photoshop, but it’s not a simple process. This tool looks awesome. Thanks for sharing this Nicholas. Have added it to my browser bookmarks. Reblogged this on https://harmonykent.co.uk/a-free-mockup-book-cover-maker/

I’ve just started using BookBrush to do this, and I love it, but I enjoy having more than one way of doing things. I like that this one offers templates of combined images, so there’s no resizing and angling to make them look good together. Definitely adding it to my arsenal. Thanks for sharing, Nicholas. Heading over there shortly! 🙂

Thank you, Stacie! Funny how we sometimes discover these things, then forget all about them. Glad to see it’s not just me 😀

Thanks for this! I’ve been using Boxshot for angle shots but they deleted their online tool and the downloads don’t seem to work well.

I just paid eighty ($80.00) dollars for a MockUp program that I’m still learning to use, and here’s the whole thing free. Go figure! Thank you, so much, Nicholas for sharing.

I’m sure the paid program has a lot of additional features compared to the free one 🙂

What a great find! I’ve used a free mock up conversion tool for some time, but it didn’t offer all those wonderful options, especially the composite pics – SO professional, thanks for sharing 😀

Are you able to download your mockups and convert to actual covers? That’s what I’d love to do. I’ve been using Canva for e-book covers but when I go to paper editions I have to find a way to increase the resolution on the graphics enough for print.

The mockups page uses the book cover to create a 3D version of it. So, you need to already have your cover ready.
There is another page on that website which lets you take a photo and turn it into a book cover: https://diybookcovers.com/designtool/ . I haven’t tested it, though, so I’m not sure what kind of resolution it gives you.
