Jon Morrow is a famous blogger who recently compiled an impressive list of 600+ power words — words cherry-picked to give your readers an emotional response. In a way, his article is similar to my own Emotional Beats, only he’s focusing on words rather than phrases:
Power words are persuasive, emotional words that trigger a positive or negative response. They can make us feel scared, encouraged, aroused, angry, greedy, safe, or curious. Authors, copywriters, and content marketers use “power words” to spice up their content and compel audiences to take action.
While Jon is focusing on words for blog posts, they can just as easily be used in fiction, blurbs, or Ad copy.
I have copied here just the power words but you should check out his original post, as he has tons of great examples–and the words available as a free pdf.

These were just the power words. Jon’s Jon’s original post, you will find some excellent examples of how to use them, plus the full list available as a free pdf.
The original date for this post was on the 7th but the recent shootings in the US made me so sad I moved the date. America, I love you, but you’re broken.
Ah, Nicholas, you mustn’t feel so bad. Throughout history there have been bad people and periods of difficulties in societies, it is a factor of human nature. You must think of all the good things in America, the millions of amazing people and continue to express your thoughts about the negative and make changes within the realms of your own control. That is the best way to stay positive and to make a difference. Hugs.

Thank you, Roberta. You’re right, we should focus on the positive.

‘Buffoon’ is one of my all-time favourite words.
And it is eminently suitable to use to describe both our current Prime Minister, and The President of the United States too. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

This is a great list, Nicholas. I have your Emotional Beats book and have referred to it often. And yes, America is broken. One of the shootings happened in my home state. Very sad.

I’m so sorry to hear about the shooting being in your state, Joan!
Thank you for your support of Emotional Beats, I really appreciate it!

My niece lives in El Paso. I used to live in the Dayton area. While I’m blessed that no one in my immediate circle was injured in the shootings, they still hit me hard. We are having problems, and I have been praying more than ever before for our nation and her people, but I refuse to write us off. This is a wonderful country with many more good points than bad. It’s just the bad is often terrible and gets the lion’s share of media attention. I choose to focus on the good things—the great things—and pray the extremists settle down. (Actually, I pray they stop.)
BTW, your Emotional Beats book is wonderful.

Thank you for both comments, Staci! I went to an American school in Greece, so I feel part American. It hurts me to see the distance between the America in my heart and the present state she’s in.

Focus on the America you know. She’s still there; she just isn’t getting much news coverage at the moment.

A true statement, Nicholas. America is broken and I’m sure there’s enough super glue to fix her. Great list! I still use Emotional Beats constantly when I’m writing! Great reference!

Great resource, Nicholas. I feel the way that you do—I don’t want to live in a country where these tragedies are happening more than once a day. Shame on us for not doing more. We’re the ones who elected the politicians, so we don’t get a pass.

Thanks for the fabulous list Nicholas. I live in Australia and we are so saddened by the gun violence that happens in America. Even though ‘thoughts and prayers’ has become a trite phrase from some politicians who express no backing for change, it is still a powerful phrase when given in genuine empathy. 🌷

Thank you, Suzanne! I loved NZ’s response to their version of a mass shooting. Shows you what can be done when politics works.
